New examples of how your check-off dollars are working for you

Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off dollars that beef cattle producers allocate to research fund a variety of studies–from keeping cattle healthy and improving pasture productivity to boosting feed efficiency and ensuring high quality beef. This post is part of an ongoing series that highlights recent research results. You can find all BCRC research summaries  under “For Producers.”

What is the ecological value of wetlands?

Canadian wetlands have lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than other parts of the world due to freeze-thaw cycles. GHG emissions from wetlands on pasture are lower than those on cropland, likely due to the forages present in the riparian zones of pasture wetlands.

What can the microbiome tell us about the difference between footrot and digital dermatitis?

charolais in PEI in muddy conditions

Similar bacteria are found in both footrot and digital dermatitis lesions, but they occur in different proportions. The differences aren’t clear enough to accurately differentiate which infection an individual animal has, but they may help diagnose outbreaks at a group level.
