This webinar will provide background information on bovine tuberculosis, including how the bacteria functions, how the disease spreads, and the testing process. Canada’s surveillance program as well as some general biosecurity advice to minimize disease transmission to your operation will also be discussed.

Reynold Bergen, Ph.D. – Beef Cattle Research Council Science Director
Dr. Bergen provides scientific and industry expertise to the BCRC, Beef Science Cluster and Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA). He works with industry to identify research priorities, reviews research proposals and scientific reports, and engages with industry and research experts on an ongoing basis. To ensure producers have access to current research information, he develops fact sheets for projects funded through the BCRC, and writes articles that are available through the CCA, provincial beef organizations, various ag media outlets and BeefResearch.ca. Reynold also works to gather and provide relevant research-based information for industry, public and government communications on specific issues.
Karin Schmid – Beef Production Specialist with Alberta Beef Producers
Karin grew up on a mixed farm near Keoma, AB, raising purebred Simmental cattle and grain, and is still involved to a limited extent. She has a Master’s Degree in Agriculture from the University of Alberta, which focused on the genetic and metabolic factors affecting feed efficiency in beef cattle. Before joining ABP, Karin spent just over four years with the Canadian Hereford Association as their Breed Development Coordinator. As the Beef Production Specialist for ABP Karin provides technical support in the areas of production, health, welfare, and research.
Dr. Allan Preston – Bovine Tuberculosis coordinator for Manitoba
Dr. Preston received his degree from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. He has worked in private practice as well as held positions with Manitoba Agriculture, Food, and Rural Initiatives including Assistant Deputy Minter for the Agri-Industry Development and Innovation Division. Currently, besides his job as the Bovine Tuberculosis coordinator, Dr. Preston operates a mixed grain and beef cattle farm, and continues to work as a veterinary consultant. Dr. Preston holds numerous positions on various boards and committees, including being the current chair of the Manitoba Veterinary Services Commission.
What is a webinar?
Webinars are just like attending a workshop or conference, but from the comfort of your own home or office. We bring the presentation right to you. They’re easy to join and participate in. A reliable, high-speed internet connection is required.
All you need to do is register beforehand, and about 5-10 minutes before the webinar is scheduled to begin, click the link you were provided when you registered. Then turn up your computer speakers or call the phone number provided. That’s it! Sit back and enjoy. As a participant, you can answer polls and surveys, and will have the opportunity to ask questions near the end of the webinar.
